Faces of Patient Safety: A Pediatric Nurse’s Perspective on Safer Care

In healthcare, patient safety is often measured through outcomes, protocols, and quality metrics. But behind every safe outcome is something even more important, people who remain committed to doing things the right way every single day.

At Raine Medical, we believe patient safety is built through preparation, protection, consistency, and the people behind it all. That’s why we are launching our summer series, Faces of Patient Safety, highlighting healthcare professionals whose work directly impacts safer care across hospitals and healthcare systems.

From nurses and clinicians at the bedside to sterile processing professionals working behind the scenes, every role contributes to safer patient outcomes.

Our first feature highlights Liz Gruber, a Charge Nurse from Children’s Hospital Colorado, who shared her perspective on patient safety in the day-to-day realities of pediatric care. One insight that especially stood out was her reminder that even in fast-paced healthcare environments, small moments matter:

“Don’t let urgency take over your safety steps. Take a moment to pause and ensure the right care and safety considerations are being taken.”

Her perspective reflects the mindset shared by so many healthcare professionals and sterile processing teams who work every day to help ensure safe, consistent patient care.

Finding a Passion for Pediatric Nursing

When asked how she found her way into healthcare, she shared:

“I’ve always loved science, learning about human physiology, and working with kids. I’ve been a nurse at Children’s for 10 years and found pediatric nursing was my passion during nursing school.”

Today, she serves as a Charge Nurse on the Oncology and Med-Surg unit, helping lead care in a fast-paced and highly specialized environment.

Patient Safety Is the Priority Behind Every Decision

For her, patient safety is not just a policy or checklist.

“Everything that I do as a nurse considers patient safety.”

That commitment becomes especially important in pediatric oncology care, where patients often face increased vulnerability due to treatments, central lines, mobility limitations, and complex medical needs.

She explained that falls and infection prevention are constant areas of focus within her department.

“Many of our patients have central lines, so we follow very specific safety protocols and infection prevention bundles every day. That includes proper line handling, specialized bathing procedures, and the use of CHG [Chlorhexidine Gluconate] wipes to help reduce bacterial flora on the skin.”

She also emphasized how critical consistency is:

“Even small lapses in communication or process can have a significant impact on patient outcomes.”

That same focus on consistency extends across the healthcare environment, including sterile processing departments where standardized preparation and instrument readiness help support safe patient care long before a procedure begins.

Behind Every Safe Outcome Is Preparation

One of the most powerful themes throughout the conversation was how closely patient safety is tied to preparation, readiness, and the reliability of the tools and systems healthcare teams depend on every day.

When asked how the condition or readiness of instruments and equipment impacts her ability to deliver safe care, she explained:

“Having reliable, ready-to-use equipment sharpens our ability to provide high-quality, effective care in an efficient way.”

In a fast-paced pediatric hospital environment, even small disruptions can have a ripple effect across patient care.

“Our heart is with the patient, so when something breaks down, even something as small as a printer, it takes so much quality and time away from what we really care about.”

Her perspective highlights an important reality across healthcare: when preparation, tools, communication, and support systems function consistently, care teams can focus more fully on patients and families rather than operational interruptions.

It also serves as a reminder that many aspects of patient safety happen behind the scenes. From sterile processing teams preparing and protecting instruments, to nurses and clinicians relying on ready-to-use tools at the point of care, every detail plays a role in supporting safe, efficient patient outcomes.

When preparation is done well, whether through communication, infection prevention practices, or properly prepared instruments and equipment, care teams are better positioned to focus fully on the patient.

Teamwork Is the Backbone of Safe Care

Like many healthcare professionals, she sees communication and teamwork as foundational to patient safety.

“Teamwork and communication are the backbone of high-quality patient care, especially in the complex setting of a hospital system.”

When safety incidents occur, teams work collaboratively to identify where communication or process gaps occurred and determine how to prevent future issues. That collaboration often extends beyond the patient room, involving departments like sterile processing that play a critical role in supporting consistency, readiness, and patient safety throughout the continuum of care.

Staying Motivated Through Difficult Days

Healthcare is demanding, especially in pediatric environments. But her motivation remains centered on the patients and families she serves.

“Even on my most challenging days, that patient and family I’m taking care of is having an even harder day. I can see how my care and consideration for their safety makes such a difference.”

One mindset that helps support safer patient care:
Staying intentional, even during fast-paced moments

At Raine Medical, we believe patient safety is built through the details, the preparation, the protection, and the people behind it all. From how instruments are handled and protected to how teams communicate and execute, every step plays a role in delivering safe, reliable care.

We are especially grateful for the sterile processing professionals and healthcare teams whose preparation and attention to detail help support patient safety behind the scenes every day.

That’s why we remain committed to designing purpose-built instrument protection solutions that support consistency, reduce variability, and help healthcare professionals focus on what matters most, the patient.
